THE GREAT WAR THEATER

GARIBALDI REFUGE HISTORY

The Garibaldi Refuge, built in the 1960s, was built next to the ruins of the old Swiss hotel bombed during the First World War (1915-1918) by a stakeout located at the “Forte Venini” in Oga, 11 km away. as the crow flies from that location.

During the Great War the trenches, the kilns of the kitchens and the now dilapidated buildings scattered over the entire surrounding area were shelter for 2000 Austro-Hungarian soldiers.

Dopo la sconfitta dell’Impero austriaco il confine venne però ridefinito e il territorio, l’attuale provincia di Bolzano, passò all’Italia.

During the Great War the trenches, the kilns of the kitchens and the now dilapidated buildings scattered over the entire surrounding area were shelter for 2000 Austro-Hungarian soldiers.

After the defeat of the Austrian Empire, however, the border was redefined and the territory, the current province of Bolzano, passed to Italy.

We then had to wait until the summer of 2003 to witness the definition, with dispute and fortunately without another war, of the exact border between the Municipality of Bormio and that of the Stelvio.
